Katharine Hepburn

“Katharine Hepburn made 43 films over sixty years in Hollywood. That alone would be a feat. Still, getting cast as a lead when you’re a stunning young actress isn’t exactly unus
ual. Young, beautiful women were often the focus of films back in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Hepburn’s acting was praised, and she won awards. However, what Katharine Hepburn did to break
barriers and defy stereotypes is what makes her stand apart from the rest. Her defiant nature began to change things for women in Hollywood.”- https://birthmoviesdeath.com/2017/03/03/broad-cinema-katharine-hepburn-was-a-trailblazer

Katharine Hepburn indomitable American stage and film actress, known as a spirited performer with a touch of eccentricity. She introduced into her roles strength of character previously considered to be undesirable in Hollywood leading ladies. As an actress, she was noted for her brisk upper-class New England accent and tomboyish beauty.

Katharine was a woman that broke all the stereotypes about Hollywood actresses. She was one of the first actresses that didn’t fit the standards. At the time, women were not supposed to wear pants, it was not pretty to see according to society and it was even considered a crime back then. However, Katherine completely broke that stereotype when she started wearing pants on set and in her everyday life. Besides style, she was also bold on the acting roles she chose. The roles she played were smart, strong and far more assertive than the ones we were seeing in the theaters back then. Think “Bringing up Baby” She wasn’t afraid to look unglamorous for the time, cutting her hair and even playing a woman pretending to be a man in “Sylvia Scarlett”.

These are all things that seem to be insignificant but, if you think deeper, these were all ways to say to people that women are not to be sexualized. They can dress whatever they want, do whatever they want and they do not deserve to be judged for that because they are not trying to please other people or be whatever others wish they were. Women have to stand up for ourselves and show others that no one can mess with them.

There’s even more to know about this actress including all the great messages that she gave us over the years, being the feminism one of the greatness but I intend to go deeper about that subject in the next podcast episode so please check it out if you find this theme interesting.

It was a pleasure to write about this incredible woman and I hope you have liked to know who this person was and if you already knew who she was, I hope that you took this opportunity to remember her.

Goodbye for now,

Francisca
